John A. Tomei

Deputy Commissioner

John A. Tomei was appointed to serve as a Deputy Commissioner for the North Carolina Industrial Commission beginning June 24, 2024.

Tomei brings a wealth of workers’ compensation and courtroom experience to the Commission, having litigated hundreds of workers’ compensation cases for nearly 35 years before the Industrial Commission, North Carolina Court of Appeals, and North Carolina Supreme Court. His decades-long career has provided him an invaluable understanding of the complex legal issues presented in many workers’ compensation claims. Tomei became a Certified Mediator in 2017, and during his time in private practice, he enjoyed helping parties resolve both workers’ compensation and tort claims. Over the course of his private sector career, Tomei presented on a variety of workers’ compensation topics at Continuing Legal Educational programs, and he served as a legal mentor to several junior attorneys.

Tomei earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law.
