department of the N.C. Industrial Commission: “When it was established as part of the State
Government Reorganization Act of 1971, the Department of Commerce (DOC) consisted almost entirely of regulatory agencies and the Employment Security Commission.
“While those responsibilities continue to be a very important part of DOC’s role in state
government, the department over the years has evolved into the state’s lead
agency for economic and community development. The department promotes a wide
variety of opportunities to improve the economy of the entire Tar Heel State,
rural and urban areas alike. Promoting tourism, exporting, film production,
downtown revitalization and industry recruitment are some of the areas for which
DOC is responsible.”
