GOV. EASLEY APPOINTS YOUNG TO INDUSTRIAL COMMISSION

RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley appointed Pamela Thorpe Young of Cary to the North Carolina Industrial Commission. Young's appointment is effective on May 1, 2003. She is filling the seat currently occupied by Renee Riggsbee.

"Renee Riggsbee has been on the commission for six years, and I thank her for her hard work and dedication," said Easley. "As a former deputy commissioner and an accomplished attorney, Pam Young brings valuable training and years of experience to her new position. Pam has served our state with distinction in several capacities and I have no doubt she will be an outstanding member of this critical commission." 

Young is currently the deputy secretary for the arts and libraries and legal counsel for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. From 1996-2002, she served as a deputy commissioner on the N.C. Industrial Commission. From 1995-1996, Young was a policy analyst for the N.C. Governor's Office of State Planning. From 1987-1990, she served as the an assistant county attorney for Travis County in Texas. She worked in the Office of General Counsel for the State Property Tax Board in Texas from 1985-1987. Young received her bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980 and her law degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1985.

The Industrial Commission administers the Workers' Compensation Act, Law Enforcement Officers', Fireman's, Rescue Squad Workers', and Civil Air Patrol members, Death Benefits Act, Tort Claim Act, and Childhood Vaccine-related Injury Compensation Program. The board has seven members who serve six-year terms and are all appointed by the Governor.
